What is meditation and why do we keep going on about it?
Meditation essentially means ‘stillness of the mind’. The aim? To concentrate the senses on a single object or action to calm the mind.
The human brain is in a constant state of unrest. An agitated mind is unable to think clearly or retain the purity of relaxed thoughts. Meditation is a mental exercise that helps to keep the mind composed and zen. The alternative is a mind in continuous motion, the cognitive wheels becoming tired, dull and stressed through overuse.
Awareness may peep through but the negative thoughts simply subdue that knowing. Noisy thoughts and gloomy emotions will cloud our thinking and we run out of oomph. Here, meditation helps.
During meditation you retain complete awareness of what is happening around you (unless of course you nod off to sleep… and if you do, that’s fine. You must have needed the rest! Practice will help). This awareness helps you to shed negative thoughts and find balance and calm.
There are different types of meditation including mindfulness meditation, transcendental, guided, chakra, Zen, yoga nidra, inner silence and Buddhist meditation. Each meditation has a different way of practicing, but the goal is the same. Choose the practice that best suits you so you can form a daily meditation habit.
